I knew the time would come when the things being taught to my children would either irritate me or flat out offend me, but I didn't expect it so soon.
We put Sam in a Christian preschool for a reason, and right now I'm missing the security of it. I'm trying to keep an eye out and obviously teaching him what WE believe, but I hope I'm catching everything!
I ordered him some books from Usborne, a company I thought was Christian, because we have a beautiful book by them about the Christmas story. This collection was a set of four "Encyclopedias" of things like sea animals, dinosaurs, space, etc. Pretty cool educational stuff that was presented in a fun way for a kid Sam's age. He was especially excited about the Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs. As I was flipping through it, low and behold, towards the end it clearly states that apes walked the earth and one day stood up on two legs and became people. !!!!! How many times do we need to explain the definition of "theory?" How can you present this as fact when it is merely THEORY and cannot be proven? How dare you try and fill my son's mind with only one idea and refuse any others to be considered. What kind of education is this? And meanwhile, every time we read this book, I will either have to skip that page or explain what WE believe. I'm glad of the opportunity to teach my son critical thinking.
Then last week his school sent home some pages of "Women Making History" that they've been studying and he's supposed to be quizzed on at the end of the year. I'm flipping through the pages and I'm like "huh?" Elizabeth Taylor? Renee Zellweger? Every female politician is a democrat? There is one black woman whom I've never heard of before and lived so long ago her only image is on a wood carving. And one Mexican woman, who happens to be Frida Kahlo and I can't help but think I don't want my son knowing her life story. Where's Rosa Parks? Condoleeza Rice? Where's Sandra Day O'Connor or the woman who invented the bullet proof vest? When did Renee Zellweger make history? Another too thin actress who can't get her life together. Elizabeth Taylor! Did she make history by having the most husbands?!
As I went through them with Sam I was shocked at how much information he had retained from school about these women. He knew all the Elizabeths (which was cute) and what they did. He was learning about these women, but were they really worth the valuable space in his head?
There's an opportunity to serve on the PTO board and I've been really tempted to volunteer, but ultimately I know I can't handle the work load right now. You better believe I will be on my children's school board at some point, though!
I know it will only get worse. I pray I can keep an open conversation going with all my kids so we can discuss what they're seeing out in the world and teach them what the Bible says about it. And even if we paid for Christian education, there's no safe bet they'd be teaching our children what we believe, either. Stay vigilant, parents! If we don't teach our children, someone else will.

I'm confused, why does thinking that "apes walked the earth and one day stood up on two legs and became people" offend your beliefs?
While there is no proof of evolution, there is overwhelming evidence of it. Why is this such an offensive idea? Do you believe Genesis is a literal story of all creation coming into existence in 7 Earth days? If so, you're going to have to pretty much throw out ANYTHING that talks about Dinosaurs.
Science is not the enemy of God. God spoke creation into existence. He dreamt up all the crazy rules that Physics, Biology, Chemistry etc have to follow. So why do we refuse to believe that He chose to create us using His own set of rules? Why are we so willing to believe that Adam was instantly created from dust, but so unwilling to believe man was slowly created from another being INCREDIBLY similar to him?
Giving up the idea that Adam literally poofed into existence does not rob God of His divinity. Even the greatest scientists still can't answer the question, "But why?" and they all marvel at the amazing nature of our universe. Magic and miracles may be fascinating to many, but I'm more impressed that such a mind-boggleingly complicated system can work in such beautiful harmony to become the sum of such an amazing creation.
Wow, brother. I'm offended because I believe the theory of evolution was created by scientists trying to disprove God's creation of man.
I do believe in a literal interpretation of Genesis, though I figured the seven days were God's time, not ours. Hence the dinosaurs could have lived and died easily within his time span before creating humans. The earth is not as old as scientists believe it is.
I love science and always have. I have a brain for it and believe science and faith can work together. Unfortunately, scientists in general have a reputation for following this field because they want to explain away God, not prove He exists.
Evolution and adaptation of a species exists - we can prove this. But when this happens the old species disappears, not lives alongside the new one. Why do the scientists own rules change when applied to the ape to man theory?
But more importantly, if you pick and choose which parts of the Bible are true and which aren't, you just negated the entire thing. It really bothers me to know you think Genesis is a nice fable someone wrote, but isn't true.
Kathy: I'm kinda late posting this but here goes. Frida Kahlo is a feminist icon, was bi-sexual,and a communist. As Dave Barry would say "I'm not making this up". Look her up on Wikipedia and you wonder if a truly Christian school would even mention her name, much less study her.
I fear not for Sam, he has you and Brian, but for the other children without strong Christian parents.
Evolution is a farce, Darwin got around to questioning himself in the sixth edition of his "Theory".
How did species with specialized dependencies survive until they got to that special point? If "Life" started in a primordial soup how did "Life" evolve to become maybe a redwood tree or a microbe eating hot sulfur at a volcanic crack in the seabed? Cockroaches and Coelacanths have remained unchanged for millions of years, are they unambitious?
Finally, I am a created Human being,
didn't evolve from anything. Secular Humanists do not offend me, I tend to smile at them and think "God removed your Baculum too".
Stay tough, God loves you and so do I. Mr. "A"
