OK, so as a thank you for taking such good care of Sam while I was sick, Brian and I bought my 8-year-old cousin Erin a new CD of one of her favorite singers. We mailed it out via a local shipping store on Tuesday. When it arrived at my aunt's house on Thursday, someone had carefully sliced open it open and removed the CD from it case. My poor cousin thought she was getting a gift and instead got swindled. As did I.
My mistake was thinking that thievery doesn't happen in the postal system. In the past I would buy a CD box and put it in there, but this time I was trying to be cheap. I triple-wrapped it in newspaper and put a homemade label on it with packing tape. So, lesson learned. Never assume someone won't steal your stuff once you hand it over to the postal service!
I just went and asked the shipping store to look into it and also filed a complaint with USPS. My aunt also turned the packing over to her mail carrier and he said they would investigate. I sure hope they find the person who did it and hold them responsible. And no, I didn't insure it. I thought it wouldn't get lost between here and Greensboro. I never thought about theft!
So, heads up - be careful lest you make the same mistake I did. Sad thing is, this would be the perfect place to mail Brian's overseas packages out of because it's right by the house, but unless we find out for sure someone at the store DIDN'T take it, I can't use it. Major inconvenience for me, but there will be far more valuable items in those care packages, most likely. And of course, if they survive our postal system, they still may get ransacked on the roads of Pakistan. Who knew this could be so hard in this day and age!
