OK, I'm going to take a moment to be that parent who thinks their kid is the smartest one in the world. Yesterday Sam had a friend over and I for once took the time to play with him and discovered how smart he is.
He picked up these two blocks, one has all animal heads on it, the other animal bodies. If you match up the head and body together EXACTLY, they will make the sound of the animal. Last year I considered throwing away this toy because it was so tricky and complicated even I had trouble with it. Before my eyes, Sam matched four animals in a matter of seconds! When did that happen?
Then we went to play in his room, and he was building with his blocks. He was making a tower of blocks that had only two connection points on each one. He asked me for a "two block." !! I've noticed he seems to know what two is, but not one or any other number. But he counted!
Then his friend got out an old set of blocks where you match the shape to the opening in the top and plop it back into the bucket. This is a more advanced one, with odd shapes and smaller blocks. And he got them! Last time he played with this toy it was hopeless. I was so impressed. To be fair, his little friend got them just as easily, but that just means Sam picks smart friends, right?
Then, he performed a problem solving exercise in a way only a man could think of. And by that I mean his solution was life-threatening.
A couple days ago he saw me fiddle with the a/c vent that is on the ceiling above his bed. I let him "help" me, of course. So while his friend was over he decided he needed to mess with it. He climbed on top of his bed and "reached" - as he says - for it, but to no avail. So then he mumbles something I don't understand, leaves the room, and comes back with his stool from the bathroom. He tries to put the stool on his bed and climb up closer from there. Needless to say, I didn't let him get that far. But how smart is he!?
And this was all within a 30 minute period yesterday afternoon.
As hard as being the mother of a 2-year-old is, it's also pretty neat watching them learn so quickly. Sniff sniff.
